Factory Media Centre is excited to announce Khaleel Gandhi, will be joining us as one of our 2023 &NOW Artists-in-Residence! Throughout the residency Khaleel will be experimenting double exposure through film.
Open Studio: May 30-June 5, 2023
Artist Talk: June 1, 7pm
This work-in-progress exhibition explores the role of the fascia in our human body and the lingering impacts of emotional trauma. It has been theorized that fascia can ’store’ emotional and psychological pain, which can show in different ways in our body. This exhibition uses the form of double exposures to give fascia a life of its own and wonder how it could really be operating underneath the surface of our skin.
Filmmaking process have traditionally lacked a lengthy development period for actors and creative teams to experiment with form and content prior to shooting. However, theatre devising techniques can be essential in the film creation process and be more than just an opportunity for “improvisation.” Khaleel will explore his own work through this lens, offering insights and revealing his process for collaborative exploration in film and video work on Thursday June 1st at 7:00pm.
About the Artist:
Khaleel Gandhi is a recent graduate from McMaster University (’21) and holds an Honours B.A. in Theatre, Film and Multimedia studies. He is currently a film & video director/editor, theatre stage manager and communications professional working at Theatre by the Bay in Barrie, Ontario. Khaleel first began his career working with Rogers TV as a teenager managing a community arts show in his hometown. Since then, he has worked on a variety of video media projects, including student films, professional short films for artist exhibitions, documentaries, educational classes and more. His theatre career began around the same time and he has stage managed both university and professional Equity-designated productions. In addition to working professionally in the film and theatre industry, Khaleel is an independent mixed media artist, focusing on the intersections between film and theatre practises. His most recent work, convergence, featured three media projects that reflected on his experiences as a shape-shifter between different identity groups as a visible ethnic minority growing up in a dominant Western culture.

About the Project:
Work in this residency will primarily investigate the form of the double exposure: to experiment with forms of overlapping imagery and video, overlays, opacities and blend modes. These visual works will be used to explore the impacts of emotional trauma on the body, specifically on our “inner self,” to reveal the complex systems of emotional processing that often goes unnoticed in our day-to-day lives.
About the Residency:
FMC’s &NOW Production Residency is an opportunity for artists and creators to utilize the space and resources at FMC to produce a new work or continue a developing body of work.
