Please join Jessica Jang and Ron Siu in conversation about the work produced during their &NOW Production Residency at FMC. The collaborators will share stories and processes behind select animations, including familial anecdotes and wider cultural influences. The artists will also reflect upon adapting to working digitally, the impacts of digital technologies on well-being, and how new modes of working have informed their artistic practices as well as their roles as arts workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Throughout this residency artists Jessica Jang (@other.jang) and Ron Siu (@rsronsiu) will be collaborating on an experimental animation project.
About the Project:
Jessica Jang and Ron Siu’s project will explore the subject of Chinese superstitions through analogue and digital approaches to animation. The artists will re-imagine stories based on Chinese constellations, Qing dynasty gossip, and family accounts of the supernatural. These threads of intergenerational belief systems rest upon a threshold between inexplicability and logic. By setting imagery and symbols into motion, the artists intend to coalesce Chinese cultural mythos across time into a shared instance of storytelling and magic.
About the Artists:
Jessica Jang is an artist whose practice spans painting, drawing, and sculpture. She received a BFA from Emily Carr University, attended Chelsea College of Art in London, UK, holds a BEd from the University of British Columbia, and an MFA from the University of Guelph. Jang has exhibited and developed arts-based education projects across Canada, in England, and Colombia. She is based in Tkaronto.
Ron Siu is an artist currently based in Tkaronto/Toronto. He graduated with his BFA in Drawing & Painting at OCAD University in 2019. His work has been in exhibitions and private collections across Canada and Scotland.
