About Hamilton LOFT’s project:
“Where are all the women?”
When music supervisor Alysha Main met actor/writer Laura Ellis at the 2019 Hamilton Film Festival’s “Local Shorts” screening, that was the question hanging in the room, where just one woman stood in a line of 20 filmmakers. Inspired by screen-based industry collectives that empower women (such as Toronto’s WIFT), Laura and Alysha, joined by award winning filmmaker Cher Obediah, decided to launch a similar endeavour for Hamilton.
The Hamilton LOFT (Ladies of Film & TV) seeks to bring together people who identify as women working in all disciplines of filmmaking. Our main objectives are to:
- Create content that is predominantly female-driven, focusing on issues that affect women and minorities
- Grow a diverse team of underrepresented groups including BIPOC, LGBTQ2SIA+
- Build skills and confidence of women through working in cross-disciplinary, supportive teams
- Demonstrate that a local, all-female identified production team is achievable
- Address challenges that women and minorities in the industry face
- Showcase the achievements of women in Hamilton’s film industry
- Partner with local film organizations to support opportunities for women through sharing knowledge, tools, and collaborating on events
- Identify mentors in the film community to consult on projects and teach workshops
In the spirit of the Hamilton LOFT, their debut film project will highlight an issue that statistically affects more women: Intimate partner violence. To help tell this story, we have partnered with SACHA (Sexual Assualt Centre Hamilton & Area); a feminist, non-profit, community-based organization that supports survivors of sexual violence.
LOFT has employed a team of 20 women to create it. We see this project as part of the paradigm shift from a male dominated industry to one that showcases the skills of bright, talented, capable women.
