Looking for a rewarding way to support your local arts community? Factory Media Centre is seeking dedicated, driven, and enthusiastic individuals to join its Board of Directors.
Factory Media Centre is Hamilton’s not-for-profit artist-driven resource centre for film, video, new media, installation, sound art, and other multimedia art forms. We are seeking individuals, especially artists, with expertise in an Executive board role, including: Treasurer, Secretary, and leaders in Fundraising and Development and Special Events to join our board! We also are seeking Directors at Large and general board members.

Board Member Core Responsibilities
- Attend monthly board meetings, and the annual general meeting
- Prepare for meetings by reading agendas, minutes, reports or other relevant documents
- Understand and demonstrate a commitment to FMC’s mandate and programming
- Discuss and vote on important issues pertaining to the governance of the organization, including strategic focus in the form of short and long-term goals
- Implement policies and procedures in line with the current strategic plan, help run committees, and advise and assist FMC staff when needed
- Lend experience and expertise by actively participating in meetings and at least one committee (programming, finance, communications, equipment, fundraising)
- Keep up-to-date on standards in the artist-run and non-profit sectors, attend professional development opportunities when necessary
- Ensure the organization is meeting all its legal and financial responsibilities
- Inform the executive of any potential conflicts of interest and maintain confidentiality
Secretary:
- In addition to the Director at Large duties the Secretary will help construct and manage meeting agendas in partnership with Board chair and Operations Coordinator
- Ensure all facts and minutes of all proceedings are properly recorded; minutes must reflect quality of the deliberations and accurately record the decisions made
- Draw upon and be well-informed of FMC by-laws and policies; ensuring that Board decisions are made in good governance and in-line with FMC’s mandate
Treasurer:
- In addition to the Director at Large duties, the Treasurer chair will oversee financial matters of FMC;
- Oversee and present budgets, accounts, and financial statements to board
- Ensure proper accounts and records are kept, maintaining sound financial management of resources and ensuring expenditure is in line with policies and goals
- Act as counter-signatory on FMC cheques and any applications for funds
- Digitally access and counter-sign for FMC’s bank accounts and CRA filing portal
- Aid with the annual audit of financial statements
Fundraising and Development:
- In addition to the Director at Large duties, the Fundraising and Development chair will also be responsible for identifying new revenue streams to reach FMC’s annual fundraising goals
- Aid FMC Staff and Board on grants
- Recruit corporate sponsors, and seek one-off donations and in-kind sponsorships
- Plan and execute fundraisers with alongside staff and Board
Special Events:
- In addition to the Director at Large duties, the Special Events chair will assist FMC staff and Board with planning, scheduling, and overseeing special events
- Research industry trends in the media art world to implement at FMC

Please note that serving on the board is a volunteer commitment. Board terms are two years and the time commitment is approximately 5-10 hours per month. Ideal candidates are practicing media artists and/or community-minded persons who have a strong interest in arts and culture. Professional training in the arts is not required.
