On October 30th from 7-9 pm, FMC hosted an Artist Talk by FMC’s exhibiting artist, Yara El Safi, and screening of Skies are Not Just Blue by Lysandre Cosse-Tremblay. The artist talk was approximately 10 minutes long beginning promptly at 7:10pm and will be followed by a Q+A period and Film Screening.

Yara, A. and brothers Monib & Tariq claim their identities as Muslims from diverse backgrounds by negotiating a space in the LGBTQ+ community and reflecting on their personal beliefs and experiences.
About Lysandre Cosse-Tremblay:
Lysandre Cosse-Tremblay graduated in 2018 from UQAM (University of Quebec in Montreal) with a Bachelor’s degree in Film Production. His recent work focuses on topics reflecting the realities of the LGBTQ+ community and illustrates social taboos. SKIES ARE NOT JUST BLUE is his second short documentary.

Bread and Salt is a collection of work that explores the body under the colonial gaze featuring soft sculptures and short film about consumable bodies; the queer Muslim experience under the Canadian colonial context.
About Yara El Safi:
Yara El Safi is a Queer, Lebanese, Muslim artist born in Abu Dhabi and raised in Tripoli, Lebanon. El Safi immigrated with her family to Windsor, Ontario, Canada in 2002 in search of a better education and better economic standing. She completed her BFA Honours and minor in Women’s Studies at Western University. Currently based in Hamilton Ontario, her BFA Specialization in Studio Art aided with the establishment of her artistic discipline in formal studio practice while her background in Women’s Studies informed her foundation to understand herself within a Canadian context and the intersections of identity in her ongoing practice.
