SOUND AS STORY
Wednesday June 17th 2015
6:30 – 9:30 pm
Victoria Fenner is a sound and radio artist based in Barrie, Ontario (formerly of Hamilton for over two decades). Her style of sound art is heavily influenced and informed by three schools of production – the abstract world of audio art, the concrete world of radio current affairs, and the artistic world of electro-acoustic music. In addition to her career as a sound artist and documentarian, Victoria has worked in all aspects of radio for over twenty years. She has worked as a producer, journalist, documentarian and sound engineer for CBC Radio and also at community stations in Canada and the United States. She is now working with video producers to create visual productions which support and enhance her sound art creations, as well as exploring new ways to present sound works in real and virtual space.
A Picture Paints a thousand words, as the saying goes. But the reverse is also true … words and sounds can paint a thousand pictures.
The focus of the Sound as Story Masterclass is to explore how to create sound pictures. Useful for video artists, podcast/radio producers as well as artists of all genres using sound (theatre, dance, electroacoustic music), the masterclass will explore:
• artistic approaches towards sound by Canadian and international artists, including film and video artists
• listening skills including soundwalking
• creative composition techniques including recording and composing with found sound
• creative field recording
• choosing appropriate technology – microphones, recorders and editing software

MUSIC FOR MANIACS!
Friday June 19th 2015
6:30 – 9:30 pm
Mexican stand-offs, Cannibals, Zombies!
All in a days work for a composer-for-hire.
Mike Trebilcock has had a long musical career full of great stories. He criss-crossed Canada with his Juno-winning rock band The Killjoys throughout the 90’s, and has since written music for the live theatre version of Night of The Living Dead (“George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead Live”), and arranged, wrote additional music, and played all of the instruments in the hit Toronto musical (South Park creator, Trey Parker’s brainchild), “Cannibal! The Musical”.
This master class is about how a composer can survive and thrive in all kinds of environments, writing music not just for himself, but also to further the creative endeavours of fellow maniacs along the road.

VIDEO BOSCH
Saturday June 20th 2015
12:30 – 3:30 pm
In a three hour workshop participants will create a surreal landscape using composite shooting and post production techniques. Using a bricolage method, we will use source material that is close at hand to create layered animated imagery to create fantastical worlds. Shooting with a green screen, participants will use Adobe After Effects to real time footage, learn masking techniques, animate using key frames, and employ virtual cameras and lighting to create a cohesive landscape.
Concepts and Techniques Demonstrated:
• Composite Editing and Modes
• Keying Methods: Keylight, Chromakeying, Luma Key, Extract and Mattes
• Creating a stage lit for keying
• Using Real Time Footage in After Effects
• Creating and Using Multiple Layers in a Single Composition
• Using Transform Tools and Effects to Animate Real Time Footage
No previous knowledge of After Effects is required.
