Spooky Action Artist Talk – May 11 at 7pm EST
Livestream to Factory Media Centre Youtube Channel
Please join FMC in welcoming artist in residence, Stephanie Deumer on Tuesday May 11 at 7pm EST. The artist talk will be hosted on FMC’s YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/user/tfhmac
Stephanie Deumer will be hosting a talk about the history of early projection and film technology and how it is connected to current AI and feminized digital assistants (such as Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa). Stephanie will highlight the ways film, technology, and magic are entangled with female disembodiment and have consistently and progressively contributed to women’s oppression over decades. Toward the end of the lecture Stephanie will encourage the audience to participate in an exercise in which we will ask Siri a series of questions and analyze/discuss ‘her’ answers. This talk compliments Stephanie’s &NOW residency project in addressing women’s representation, as well as themes of reproduction—including biological, technological, and social. This is your opportunity to meet Stephanie, learn about her work, and ask questions.

About the project:
The video will explore varied and diverse concepts of Mother Nature, delving into the complicated relationship between women and nature. While considering how concepts of Mother Nature attach female gender to nature through attributes of life-giving, nurturing, tending, and care, the work will also look closely at the ways in which women are conditioned and trained to possess these traits—perhaps allowing them to fulfill an illusion of having these characteristics naturally.
A message from the artist:
“For the duration of the residency, I plan to use the time to work on two components of the project: the solar-powered installation and the video. I will set up the solar-powered circuit, and as video content is developed and experimented with, I will project it for seedlings. A viewing of the installation will be accessible once a week for the virtual open studio hours, so that viewers will be able to see the weekly progression of the plants growing with the light of the video. For a second virtual open studio session each week, I plan to screen share my computer while I research and glean footage, and edit imagery into an evolving video”
About the residency:
