Factory Media Centre (FMC) is seeking a Programming Assistant for a 22 week placement supported by Young Canada Works/Building Careers in Heritage from October 13th, 2023 to March 31, 2024. The Programming Assistant should be hardworking, detail-oriented, and cordial, ready to provide research, programming, and outreach support to the Operations Coordinator and FMC board of directors. This position will include an unpaid two-week winter break from December 20th 2023 to January 3rd, 2024.
The ideal candidate will have education and experience in an arts or humanities program, with substantial interest and experience with new media, including independent film, video, and other streaming multimedia art forms. The incumbent will have undertaken a research program in a relevant area of the arts, while having demonstrated initiative in supporting arts and/or community programming during their studies. They should also demonstrate advanced digital literacy, with some experience with social media management and experience with basic website content management systems, in addition to familiarity with and interest in digital photography, video, and sound recording.

Wage: $18/hour
Responsibilities:
- Support of program planning, timeline development, and scheduling
- Liaising with staff and artists, filmmakers, curators
- Facilitation of equipment library services
- Support in execution of programs, including equipment and tech support
- Public facing duties, including welcoming visitors to exhibitions and events, orienting publics, providing information as needed
- Support with gathering content, drafting copy, and proofing for newsletters, web pages, social media, and other digital platforms, as well as liaising with press
- Research toward future programs
Qualifications:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent computer skills: research, typing, social media, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite; Quickbooks, Zoom, WordPress and/or Mailchimp considered an asset
- Knowledge of contemporary media art and Canadian artist-run centres, and the local art scene
- Ability to effectively multi-task within a fast-paced environment, independently as well as in a team setting
- Proficiency in French considered an asset
As this position is funded in part through the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program, all applicants must be registered in the YCW candidate pool and meet the current YCW-BCH eligibility criteria. An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
- are legally entitled to work in Canada;
- are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
- will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;
- are unemployed or underemployed;
- are a college or university graduate; and
- are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program, and have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy.
