Please join us on October 8th at 7pm on Facebook Live for a screening of a rough cut of The North Star: Finding Black Mecca by local filmmakers Angel Panag and Godfred Adjei, followed by an artist talk by the team.
Once called ‘The Black Mecca’ and ‘A Colored Man’s Paris’ – Chatham-Kent is a region in Canada with a long history of black settlement. In spite of hardships, the community has thrived. The North Star is a film that documents the past and the present of a people who have helped shape this country, but are often left out of its textbooks.
The North Star: Finding Black Mecca film team have self-funded, directed, and produced the film entirely themselves and have plans to continue working on this series. Angel and Godfred will be delivering a presentation on how they got started in media, and share the process on how they researched and shot the film.

Angel Panag is a healthcare advocacy worker with Six Nations of the Grand River and a multidisciplinary artist based in Hamilton, Ontario. As a DJ, Angel has played over 50 shows around Central and Atlantic Canada – opening for artists such as Rich Aucoin, Born Ruffians, Weaves and Lowell. His affiliations in the music industry led to invitations to appear on set for music videos, and eventually film and theatre productions. His casting in the Tony-award winning musicals ‘The Wiz’ allowed him to perform in theatres around Canada and the US. Despite his experiences as a performer, Angel found the greatest joy while working behind the scenes in film. He strongly believes in the role the arts can play in influencing societal change.
Godfred Adjei is a Ghanaian-born, Canadian Cinematographer living in Toronto, Ontario. Godfred grew up wanting to be a director, but once he got into the field he gained a passion for cinematography. Having shot on a number of formats such as Super 16mm, 35mm Film, Red Digital Cinema and ARRI Alexa. The camera is no stranger to Godfred. He has been able to gain a deep understanding for the balance between light, darkness, lens and movement to shape a picture into the look he wants. Godfred Adjei has gained over 50 credits in camera and cinematography, 20 of which can be found on IMDB. His character and charisma has been known to bring life to sets and his skills have given him the nickname ‘GOD DOP’ (‘God’ for Godfred, and ‘DOP’ for director of photography). At the end of the day Godfred just wants to make great films; films that are memorable, beautiful, and stand out.
